The fact that Thailand is becoming an aging society has created an attentiveness among people to make sure that our senior citizens as well as persons with disabilities of all genders will be facilitated wherever they go. Suphanburi is one of the provinces that has prepared for the approaching aging society. With its location that is not far from Bangkok and having several places of interest, Suphanburi has lately started to gain more popularity from tourists who have never visited the province before.

Suphanburi is one of the designated areas under a responsibility of the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (Public Organization) or DASTA. The organization and its networks have joined forces to add a “friendly design” or “universal design” to the tourist attractions, entertainment spots, and shops so these places are accessible by everyone.

Dr. Somjin Charnkrabi, manager of the designated area office 7 (DASTA office 7) has mentioned that it is essential for all the tourist sites to have the “friendly or universal design” which everyone, regardless of their ages, genders, and body conditions, can access and utilize services with convenience, safety, and equality. An objective of implementing the friendly or universal design is to make a concept of “Tourism for All” become a reality.

DASTA and its networks have made a policy to support and encourage the friendly or universal design and the concept of “Tourism for All” in Suphanburi province and other areas around the Chao Phraya River. This concept aims to provide a better quality of life to people of all ages and genders, especially the senior citizens and persons with disabilities. With the friendly or universal design, places such as the tourist spots, hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and rest areas will offer a wheelchair parking, a wheelchair ramp, a toilet for disabled persons as well as a signage for the senior citizens and persons with disabilities. This project is anticipated to be completed within a 3-year period.

Dr. Somjin has stated that the development plan for a friendly designed city focuses on sharing a knowledge and an understanding together with organizing travel programs in the environmentally friendly and universally designed tourist attractions. 3 focused areas of the plan are as follows:

          1. Provide knowledge and understanding as well as collaborating with both public and private sectors in Suphanburi province to arrange the travel programs in the friendly designed tourist attractions and shape the province to be a role model for the “Tourism for All” concept.

          2. Create a network and cooperation between related government agencies, private sectors, and communities to improve the places of interest and entertainment spots to sustainably comply with and incorporate the friendly design to their locations.

          3. Support and encourage tourism-related establishments and entertainment spots in Suphanburi province to apply the friendly design to their locations and facilities in order to make Suphanburi and other provinces around the Chao Phraya River become the role models for the friendly designed cities.
